Can Face Yoga Embrace Both Tradition and Science?

Many individuals express astonishment when I reveal that I incorporate certain facial products which are not entirely 'natural.' They often imagine me residing in a treehouse, constantly nibbling on carrots while applying mud masks to my face throughout the day. While I truly relish climbing trees, savoring fresh carrots, and indulging in therapeutic mud baths, I also strategically utilize products and techniques grounded in scientific research whenever they prove beneficial.
In my routine, I rely on custom-blended face oils made exclusively from natural components, including golden cold-pressed organic jojoba oil enriched with my personally crafted essences extracted from flowers and plants. I employ traditional facial tools, meticulously custom-crafted in China from semi-precious stones and crystals, to blade and sculpt my face—these exquisite items are available for purchase in the shop. Furthermore, I integrate advanced therapies such as red light treatment, microcurrent stimulation via contemporary devices, and laboratory-formulated skincare solutions designed to enhance collagen production deep within the skin layers. In particular, over-the-counter retinoids have proven remarkably effective for me in achieving smoother skin texture and improved overall tone.
As a pragmatic individual, I dedicate significant time to reading and conducting thorough research. I possess a genuine passion for acquiring new knowledge and insights. At the same time, I remain deeply committed to the traditions embedded in my yoga practice, paying homage to the profound wisdom passed down through generations. Yoga represents an ancient repository of knowledge and a comprehensive array of practices that demonstrate remarkable resilience and continuous evolution. In Indian philosophy, yoga has historically been regarded as a legitimate science. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, compiled into four concise books through oral traditions and later formalized by the sage Patanjali thousands of years ago, meticulously delineate the systematic principles—or 'science'—of yoga. Ancient yogis articulated concepts akin to atomic theory within the Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, even if the terminology differed from modern usage. In my own practice, I wholeheartedly embrace both the scientific underpinnings and the spiritual essence of yoga.
Human societies and their cultural practices naturally progress over time. We continually innovate, which is not only necessary but inevitable, all while vigilantly preserving the enduring value of time-honored methods. Adhering to tradition does not preclude the pursuit of progress or the emergence of groundbreaking advancements.
When I first introduced Yoga Face back in 2005, it garnered widespread enthusiasm from many practitioners, though it also faced skepticism from a few purists. Some rigid traditionalists questioned whether I was genuinely teaching yoga. Throughout the Yoga Face workshops, I faithfully adhered to the foundational traditions and insights I had absorbed during more than three decades of dedicated practice—having begun my yoga journey at the tender age of eleven and visiting my initial ashram at that same young age. I delved deeply into ancient Indian yoga techniques specifically related to facial care, broadening my research to encompass treasured wisdom and methodologies from Tibetan and Chinese traditions as well. Additionally, I studied Western anatomical principles and innovated a series of original facial poses. I discovered an existing collection of resources on facial wellness through targeted exercises, as documented by pioneers like Eva Fraser and Juliet Kando in works such as The Natural Facelift published by Sterling Press. Ultimately, I developed a comprehensive system of practices that harmoniously blend the forces of nature with empirical science. Over numerous years, I rigorously tested these methods on myself and my students, meticulously recording outcomes through photographs and detailed notes, and iteratively refining the techniques for optimal results.
Each person establishes their own personal boundaries and standards. Personally, I steer clear of dermal fillers and Botox injections. To maintain complete transparency, I did once consent to such injections solely for a commercial acting gig I secured back in 2015. I approached this experiment with a purely scientific mindset: as someone accustomed to a completely natural facial appearance, what changes would occur if I introduced fillers and Botox?
The outcomes left me dissatisfied. I felt as though I resembled a stranger in the mirror, someone utterly unfamiliar to me. I experienced relief as the effects gradually dissipated, yet I harbored no regrets about the trial—it provided valuable lessons. Fortunately, my athletic physique, characterized by high muscle density, enabled my metabolism to efficiently process and eliminate the synthetic substances. I appreciate having glimpsed an alternative lifestyle and hold no judgment toward those who opt for such interventions on their faces. For my part, however, I prefer to remain devoted to carrots, tree-dwelling adventures, mud therapies, yoga, and the sporadic use of retinoids or vitamin C capsules. That said, I remain open to evolving my approach should compelling new evidence or innovative processes arise in the future.
Progressing forward with optimism and growth!
